About Sponsor a Mum

Sponsor a Mum is an IMET2000 project looking at the global maternal health of young women in rural areas.

Sponsor a Mum believes that safe motherhood is a human right. We aim to reduce maternal mortality by working with remote, rural communities to improve their access to healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth.

One woman dies every minute of every day from pregnancy and childbirth, 99% of these are in the developing world. For every woman who dies during childbirth, another 30 are injured or become sick.

"The focus must be on the right of women to have basic maternal health services" says UNICEF

One of the UN's Millenium Development Goals is to reduce the ratio of maternal mortality by three quarters but as the director-general of the WHO said" the world has failed to make a dent… the number of maternal deaths will not go down until more women have access to skilled attendants at birth and obstetric emergency care"

Each year, 4 million babies are stillborn, preventable by ensuring a mother’s access to healthcare. When a mother dies, a child’s chance of surviving drops dramatically.
